Caring for Your Roof After a Storm

Caring for Your Roof After a Storm

ROOF CARE

Depending on where you live, you might encounter a serious storm or two. Some places endure blizzards, others hunker down through tornados. Regardless of the details, just about every town in the US will have the occasional serious rainstorm. Sometimes these storms are accompanied by lots of wind that will tear up your roof. If you ever have to face the aftermath of a storm, here are some tips for how to deal with your roof (contact us for more information).

Carefully Check Out Your Roof

Make sure that the storm has fully passed before attempting to look at your roof. You don’t want to risk getting hurt if there is more snowing or blowing to come! Always emphasize safety when you’re assessing your roof.

Once things are calm and safe again, carefully head on up to your attic to see if there is any damage in there. That can be the first sign that something serious has happened to your roof. If things are dry in there, you’re probably looking at some minor damage that can be fixed easily. If it’s a wet mess in there, your roof might have some serious structural damage that will need immediate attention.

Drag out your safest ladder and climb up to the roof. Check out all sides and look for torn shingles and flashing, or other kinds of damage. If it’s severe damage, call in a professional and don’t try to climb onto the roof itself.

Take Care of Your Interior

If water is leaking into your home, take the steps necessary to protect your stuff. Use buckets to catch dripping water, move furniture away from leaks, and cover items with sheets of plastic. If you can cover the exterior with a tarp or similar protective sheet, that might also help. Do whatever you can to reduce extra damage to the exterior and interior of your home.

Give Your Insurance Company a Call

Next, you’ll need to call your insurance company to let them know what happened. They’ll have a lot of questions for you and you might not yet have answers. Give them the heads up before calling in professional help, however, so that you can be sure they will cover the damage and repair.

Call a Recommended Professional

Roofing professionals in your area are used to coming in to assess for post-storm damage and figure out what needs to happen to get your roof back to 100%. They can help you figure out what needs to be taken care of today and how long it all will take to fix. You can rest easy, knowing that they have your best interest in mind and want to preserve and extend the life of your roof.
